I don't know if I ever liked to go to the gas station but I can truly say that I really don't like having to go to the gas station to get gas now. In just the past month our gas rose about 80 cents a gallon. Experts are saying that there is no relief coming our way and that gas prices will even get higher. Besides getting an electric car (not like electricity prices aren't soaring or the fact that there aren't enough electric cars yet), what's a person to do to save money at the gas pump?
Here's 3 easy ways to save money on gas –
1. Keep your tires properly inflated. This is an easy thing that we often don't think about. It might seem like a daunting task but companies like Discount Tires have an area that you can just pull up and someone checks your tire pressure and inflates them while you sit in your care. It's free and you never even have to go into the building. If you don't have a Discount Tires near you, give the closest tire company (or even Walmart) a call to see if they check tire pressure and fill your tires for free.
2. Clean out your vehicle and remove the excess weight. Extra weight in your vehicle decreases your mileage and day after day that can add up. Do you have a set of golf clubs, your kid's sports paraphernalia or just a bunch of junk in your trunk or back seat? Get rid of it! What about extra seats? That 3rd row of seating is usually removable and it's heavy. If you're not using it take it out and leave it in the garage or a spare room in your house.
3. Use a gas app to save you money. This has been the best app that we installed in October of 2021. The gas app we use is called Upside (formerly the Get Upside app) and you can easily check the gas stations in your area and see what the gas prices are and how much you can get back. The amount can vary depending on the gas station and range from 1 cent to 25 cents back a gallon. The app also has specials and referrals where we've saved 40 cents a gallon on gas. We try to never fill up if the gas stations are offering a penny a gallon because it can change hourly. We just wait a few hours or sometimes days and the amount changes. Recently our gas stations were only offering 7 cents back a gallon but we were shopping about 20 miles from our house and checked the gas stations in that area. To our surprise those were offering 23 cents a gallon and the gas was the same price as the gas stations near our house. It pays to check your Upside app!
